Class 5 Maths Notes Chapter 2 – Class 5 Fractions Notes
We often share things in our daily life, like dividing a chocolate among friends, slicing a cake, or pouring half a glass of milk. Whenever we divide something into equal parts, each part is called a fraction. Fractions help us understand how much we have out of a whole. They are all around us, even when we do not notice.
→ A fraction represents a part of a whole.
→ A fraction has two numbers: one above the bar and the other below the bar. The number above the bar is called the numerator, and the number below the bar is called the denominator of a fraction.
→ The fractions that represent the same part of a whole object or a fractional number are called equivalent or equal fractions.
→ We can compare fractions with same denominator by comparing their numerators, e.g., \(\frac{3}{5}>\frac{2}{5}\).
→ We can compare fractions with same numerators but different denominators by comparing their denominators is reverse order, e.g., \(\frac{7}{8}<\frac{7}{5}\).
→ We can compare fractions with references to 1 and \(\frac{1}{2}\), e.g., \(\frac{3}{4}\) is less than 1 and \(\frac{5}{3}\) is greater than 1, so \(\frac{3}{4}<\frac{5}{3}\) .
