They say that they are facing trouble with remembering even what took place in the last 24 hours. Students even have knowledge gaps in basic skills because they tune in and out in the classroom.

When students with attention deficits attend to the information, they may only attend at a very superficial level. So they fail to elaborate on incoming data. They don’t activate prior knowledge and relate it with the to-be-learned information.

Students with deficits in encoding information in memory may have problems remembering directions or what they read. They even have trouble memorizing what teachers said in class or what others said in conversations.

Problems with Long Term Memory Storage

Students with long-term storage problems rely on rote memorization. This technique may be adequate for storing information in short-term memory, but it leads to poor storage in long-term memory.

Kids who have deficits in long-term memory may also have issues with recalling what the memory research literature has known as paired associates. Paired associates are two things that hang together. Deficits in the categorization or storage of paired associates fall under the conceptual umbrella of the declarative semantic memory system.

People with deficits in memory storage may also have trouble with storing information about events in their lives. Deficits may also happen in the storage of information in the nondeclarative memory system, especially with the memory of skills or procedures.

Problems with Long Term Memory Retrieval

Students who have problems with long-term memory retrieval will forget the information that they learned and score fewer marks on the test. This inability to recall information from long-term memory when it is needed is associated with deficits in encoding and storing information. They fail to store information and retrieve it.

Students who have trouble with storing information in a specific format also have trouble with recalling information in the same format. Deficits of recalling events or episodes can fail them to recall conversations or special trips. In addition to deficits in recall, students may also have trouble with the identification of information in memory.

Problems with Working Memory

Problems with working memory mostly happen in school students. Students may have issues with following directions even if they have understood them. They may also have problems with solving math calculations that are long and word problems. Because to solve these problems, they have to access information from long-term memory while remembering what they have done and what they need to be done in later steps.

Students who feel difficulty with working memory may also have problems with many other thinking tasks like problem-solving, comparing and contrasting ideas. As students have to remember multiple components and generate solutions and make decisions about which can be best. Thus, remembering multiple things or working memory is difficult for school children and others too.
