Rani Abbakka Summary in English
A long time ago, there was a brave queen named Rani Abbakka, who ruled Ullal, a small kingdom on the west coast of Karnataka. The Portuguese had taken control of Ullal and demanded a yearly tribute (tax) from its rulers. When Rani Abbakka became queen, she refused to pay the tribute and decided to fight against them. Even though her husband, King Veera Narasimha, and some other rulers were afraid of the Portuguese, Abbakka stood strong.
She declared that Ullal was a free and sovereign kingdom. She stopped selling spices and cloth to the Portuguese and formed a trade alliance with Arabia with the help of the Zamorin of Kozhikode. (Kozhikode is a city in the northern part of Kerala.)
This made the Portuguese very angry. They tried to capture Ullal by attacking it, but Abbakka and her soldiers fought back bravely. With her powerful army, she defeated the Portuguese at Mangalore, forcing them to retreat. The Portuguese governor in Goa was furious. He sent a large army to attack Ullal again. But Rani Abbakka encouraged her soldiers to fight fearlessly, saying this battle would decide Ullal’s fate. After a fierce fight that lasted four days, Abbakka and her army defeated the Portuguese once and for all.
Later, Rani Abbakka helped Venkataappa Nayak, the King of Keladi, to capture the fort of Mangalore. Finally, under Shivappa Nayak’s rule, the Portuguese were completely driven out of Mangalore. Rani Abbakka is remembered as a fearless warrior queen who fought for her people and protected her land from foreign rule.
