Reading Skills (22 Marks)

Question 1.
Read the following text. (12)

1. It was a bleak, rainy day, and I had no desire to drive up the winding mountain road to my daughter Carolyn’s house. But she had insisted that I come and see something at the top of the mountain.

2. So, here I was, reluctantly making the two-hour journey through fog that hung like veils. By the time I saw how thick it was near the summit, I’d gone too far to turn back. Nothing could be worth this, I thought, as I inched along the perilous highway.

3. “I’ll stay for lunch, but I’m heading back down as soon as the fog lifts,” I announced when I arrived. “But I need you to drive me to the garage to pick up my car,” Carolyn said. “Could we at least do that?”

4. “How far is it?” I asked. “About three minutes,” she said. “I’ll drive- I’m used to it.”

5. After ten minutes on the mountain road, I looked at her anxiously. “I thought you said three minutes.” She grinned. “This is a detour.”

6. Turning down a narrow track, we parked the car and got out. We walked along a path that was thick with old pine needles. Huge black-green evergreens towered over us. Gradually, the peace and silence of the place began to fill my mind.

7. Then we turned a corner and stopped – and I gasped in amazement. From the top of the mountain, sloping for several acres across folds and valleys, were rivers of daffodils in radiant bloom. A profusion of colour – from the palest ivory to the deepest lemon to the most vivid salmon – blazed like a carpet before us. It looked as though the Sun had tipped over and spilled gold down the mountainside.

8. At the centre, cascaded a waterfall of purple hyacinths. Here and there were coral-coloured tulips. And as if this bonanza were not enough, Western bluebirds frolicked over the heads of the daffodils, their tawny breasts and sapphire wings like a flutter of jewels.

9. A riot of questions filled my mind. Who created such beauty? Why? How? As we approached the home that stood in the centre of the property, we saw a sign that read: “Answers to the Questions I Know You are Asking.”

10. The first answer was: “One Woman – Two Hands, Two Feet.” The second was: “One at a Time”. The third was: “Started in 1958”.

11. As we drove home, I was so moved by what we had seen, I could scarcely speak. “She changed the world,” I finally said, “one bulb at a time. She started almost 40 years ago, probably just the beginning of an idea, but she kept at it.”

12. The wonder of it would not let me go. “Imagine,” I said, “If I’d had a vision and worked at it, just a little bit every day, what might I have accomplished? ” Carolyn looked at me sideways, smiling. “Start tomorrow”, said she. “Better yet, start today.”

Subject Importance of vocational education

Sir/Ma’am

Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I would like to draw the attention of today’s youth towards a growing need and demand for vocational education.

Vocational Education involves a blend of practical skills and knowledge necessary to perform specific jobs or trades. It often focuses on hands-on training and real-world experiences which are essential for many professions. Vocational education enhances employability by equipping individuals with job-specific skills that are in-demand in the workforce.

It helps individuals explore and pursue careers in fields such as healthcare, construction, automotive technology, information technology, culinary arts and many others. Employers often prefer candidates who have received vocational training because they are ready to contribute to the workplace from day one. Therefore, choosing to learn some skills and vocations will help a person be ready for a job and be an asset for the country.

Hence, I would like to encourage today’s youth to explore vocational education and learn some skills which would prove helpful for their career.

Thanking you

Yours faithfully

Subject Raising awareness and promoting ecotourism to the masses

Sir/Ma’am

Through the medium of this letter, I would like to raise awareness and sensitise people about the importance of ecotourism, i.e. sustainable tourism practices that minimise negative impacts on the environment while benefiting local communities.

Ecotourism can be a boon for Earth and its ecological balance. Being mindful during travel can help us conserve natural resources and not harm the environment. Encouraging travellers to adopt responsible travel practices such as reducing waste, conserving water and energy, respecting wildlife and supporting local economies by purchasing local products and services is one way to contribute.

Another is to involve local communities in ecotourism initiatives by providing training and employment opportunities, allocating funds and resources to support conservation projects, promoting sustainable transportation options such as biking, hiking, public transit and carpooling to reduce carbon emissions.

I hope that the Ministry will consider these steps which can help raise awareness about Ecotourism by sensitising people and making them realise its positive effects on the environment.

Thanking you

Yours sincerely

Answer:
(A) The Importance of Diversified Culture by XYZ
The importance of diversified culture is multifaceted and deeply ingrained in the human society. India is one such nation that embraces many cultures. India celebrates a myriad of festivals throughout the year reflecting its cultural and religious diversity. Diwali, Holi, Eid, Christmas, Navratri and Durga Puja are examples of just a festivals celebrated with great fervour and enthusiasm across the country. Many of these festivals are dedicated to seasons like Basant Panchmi, Baisakhi and Lohri while those dedicated to harvest include Makar Sankranti, Bihu, Pongal and Onam, to name a few.

India also has a multitude of castes, creed, colour and convictions. The Indian cuisine is also incredibly diverse, with each region offering its own unique flavours, ingredients and cooking techniques which are widely popular. Naturally, traditional Indian clothing varies widely from region to region, with sarees, salwar kameez, dhotis and kurta-pyjamas being some of the most common attire which are also loved by the foreigners visiting the country.

India celebrates several national festivals that hold significant cultural, historical and religious importance. Some of these are Republic Day (26th January), Independence Day (15th August) and Gandhi Jayanti (2nd October). Or

(B) A World with Smog-free and Clean Air by ABC

With the ever growing population of India and the growing concern for air pollution, the people of India have quickly welcomed EVs or Electric Vehicles. The reason behind this change is that Electric Vehicles have lower running costs compared to gasoline-powered vehicles. EVs have fewer moving parts which results in reduced maintenance requirements and lower long-term maintenance costs. Moreover, electricity is generally cheaper than gasoline on a per-mile basis, leading to lower fueling costs for EV owners.

One of the primary advantages of electric vehicles is their reduced environmental impact. EVs produce zero tailpipe emissions which helps improve air quality and reduce pollution, both air and noise, in urban areas. Additionally, when powered by renewable energy sources such as solar or wind power, EVs can significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to gasoline-powered vehicles. Electric vehicles reduce dependency on fossil fuels which are finite resources and contribute to climate change.

Overall, electric vehicles play a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality and transitioning to a more sustainable transportation system. As technology continues to evolve and adoption rates increase, electric vehicles will become increasingly integral to efforts to combat climate change and create a cleaner, greener future.

Answer Any One of the following two questions in about 150 words. (8)

(A) In the poems ‘Ozymandias’ by Percy Bysshe Shelley and ‘Not Marble, Nor the Gilded Monuments’ by William Shakespeare, the concept of Time is explored but each poet treats it in a distinct manner. Elucidate.
Answer:
The poems ‘Ozymandias’ by Shelley and ‘Not Marble, nor the Gilded Monuments’ by Shakespeare are related to each other through some similarities and differences. The main similarity between the poems is that both the poems are on the subject of ‘time’.

In both these poems, the poets convey the message that riches and wealth are not lasting and they perish with time. In both the poems, the poets have treated ‘time’ as a destructive agent. They describe the ravages of time taking its toll on all materialistic things.

The main difference between the two poems is that, in ‘Not Marble, nor the Gilded Monuments’, Shakespeare treats love and poetry to be everlasting. In ‘Ozymandias’, Shelley does not talk about poetry or love. He shows that even the mightiest decays with time. He stresses that nothing is immortal.

Dear Pratiksha

How are you? I am fine as well. Your previous letter about feeling sad about not achieving good scores in Science competition got me thinking. I believe that we shouldn’t give up and be upset because of failures and difficult conditions but we should be brave and courageous. I learned this lesson when I read two stories ‘Two Gentlemen of Verona’ and ‘The Letter’.

In the first story, two brothers, Nicola and Jacopo, perform many odd jobs to earn money for their sister’s treatment. Even after losing their parents and their home, they do not give up and work hard to help their sister get better. ‘The Letter’ is a story with the same message where an old man visits a post office regularly for five years in hopes that he would receive his daughter’s letter addressed to him. He goes early in the morning daily just because he didn’t want to miss the chance of hearing from his daughter.

So, I suggest you read these stories because they’ll inspire you to work harder and not be sad about failed attempts.

Yours affectionately
Prachi
