Class 4 Maths Notes Chapter 5 – Class 4 Sharing and Measuring Notes

→ An object that is complete in itself is called a whole. The numeral 1 is used to represent one whole object. Often, we divide a whole into parts to use or consume it. When a whole object is divided into equal parts, each part is called a fraction. It can be written as:
= \(\frac{\text { Number of equal parts taken }}{\text { Total number of equal parts the object is divided into }}\)

→ Total number of equal parts the object is divided into Terms such as half, quarter (one-fourth), three-fourths, etc., are mostly used in our daily life to represent fractions. A collection can also be considered as a whole, and a fraction can represent one or more equal parts of that collection.

→ A fraction represents a part of a whole.

→ When there is a group of objects, it is referred as a collection, and one or more objects from the group as fractions of the collection.

→ When we divide an object into two equal parts, each part is called one-half \(\left(\frac{1}{2}\right)\) of the whole.

Sharing and Measuring Class 4 Notes Maths Chapter 5

→ When we divide an object into three equal parts, each part is called one-third \(\left(\frac{1}{3}\right)\) of the whole.

→ When we divide an object into four equal parts, each part is called one-quarter \(\left(\frac{1}{4}\right)\) of the whole.

→ When we divide an object into four equal parts, then 3 parts together out of 4 equal parts is called three-fourths or three-quarters \(\left(\frac{3}{4}\right)\) of the whole.

→ To find half of a collection, we divide it by 2.

→ To find one-third oba collection, we divide it by 3.

→ To find one-fourth of a collection, we divide it by 4.
