Form the pair of linear equations for the following problems and find their solutions (if they exist) by the elimination method:
(i) If we add 1 to the numerator and subtract 1 from the denominator, a fraction reduces to 1. It becomes \frac { 1 }{ 2 }, if we only add 1 to the denominator. What is the fraction?
(ii) Five years ago, Nuri was thrice as old as Sonu. Ten years later, Nuri will be twice as old as Sonu. How old are Nuri and Sonu?
(iii) The sum of the digits of a two-digit number is 9. Also, nine times this number is twice the number obtained by reversing the order of the digits. Find the number.
(iv) Meena went to a bank to withdraw ₹2000. She asked the cashier to give her ₹50 and ₹100 notes only. Meena got 25 notes in all. Find how many notes of ₹50 and ₹100 she received.
(v) A lending library has a fixed charge for the first three days and an additional charge for each day thereafter. Saritha paid ₹ 27 for a book kept for seven days, while Susy paid ₹21 for the book she kept for five days. Find the fixed charge and the charge for each extra day.

Formulate the following problems as a pair of linear equations and hence find their solutions:
(i) Ritu can row downstream 20 km in hours and upstream 4 km in 2 hours. Find her speed of rowing in still water and the speed of the current.
(ii) 2 women and 5 men can together finish an embroidery work in 4 days, while 3 women and 6 men can finish it in 3 days. Find the time taken by 1 woman alone to finish the work, and also that taken by 1 man alone.
(iii) Roohi travels 300 km to her home partly by train and partly by bus. She takes 4 hours if she travels 60 km by train and the remaining by bus. If she travels 100 km by train and the remaining by bus, she takes 10 minutes longer. Find the speed of the train and the bus separately.

Ex 3.7 Class 10 Maths Question 1.
The age of two friends Ani and Biju differ by 3 years. Ani’s father Dharam is twice as old as Ani and Biju is twice as old as his sister Cathy. The ages of Cathy and Dharam differ by 30 years. Find the ages of Ani and Biju.
Solution:
Let the ages of Ani and Biju be x years and y years respectively.
If Ani is older than Biju
x – y =3
If Biju is older than Ani
y – x = 3
-x + y =3   [Given]

Subtracting equation (i) from equation (ii), we get:
3x – 57
⇒ x = 19
Putting x = 19 in equation (i), we get
19-y = 3
⇒ y = 16

⇒  x =  21
Putting x = 21 in equation (iii) we get
21 -y=  -3
⇒  y  =   24
Hence, Ani’s age is   either 19 years or 21 years and Biju’s age is either 16 years or 24 years.

Ex 3.7 Class 10 Maths Question 2.
One says, “Give me a hundred, friend! I shall then become twice as rich as you”. The other replies, “If you give me ten, I shall be six times as rich as you”. Tell me what is the amount of their (respective) capital?
Solution:
Let the two friends have ₹ x and ₹ y.
According to the first condition:
One friend has an amount = ₹(x + 100)
Other has an amount = ₹ (y – 100
∴  (x + 100) =2 (y – 100)
⇒  x + 100 = 2y – 200
⇒ x – 2y = -300       …(i)
According to the second condition:
One friend has an amount = ₹(x – 10)
Other friend has an amount =₹ (y + 10)
∴  6(x – 10) = y + 10
⇒ 6x – 60 = y + 10
⇒    6x-y = 70                                        …(ii)
Multiplying (ii) equation by 2 and subtracting the result from equation (i), we get:
x – 12x = – 300 – 140
⇒ -11x = -440
⇒  x = 40
Substituting x = 40 in equation (ii), we get
6 x 40 – y = 70
⇒ -y   = 70- 24
⇒  y   = 170
Thus, the two friends have ₹ 40 and ₹ 170.

Ex 3.7 Class 10 Maths Question 3.
A train covered a certain distance at a uniform speed. If the train would have been 10 km/h faster, it would have taken 2 hours less than the scheduled time. And, if the train were slower by 10 km/h, it would have taken 3 hours more than the scheduled time. Find the distance covered by the train.
Solution:
Let the original speed of the train be x km/h
and the time taken to complete the journey be y hours.            ‘
Then the distance covered = xy km

Case I: When speed = (x + 10) km/h and time taken = (y – 2) h
Distance = (x + 10) (y – 2) km
⇒   xy = (x + 10) (y – 2)
⇒ 10y – 2x = 20
⇒  5y – x = 10
⇒ -x + 5y = 10   …(i)

Case II: When speed = (x – 10) km/h and time taken = (y + 3) h
Distance = (x – 10) (y + 3) km
⇒  xy = (x – 10) (y + 3)
⇒ 3x- 10y = 30    …(ii)
Multiplying equation (i) by 3 and adding the result to equation (ii), we get
15y – 10y = 30 f 30
⇒ 5y = 60
⇒   y   = 12
Putting y = 12 in equation (ii), we get
3x- 10 x 12= 30
⇒  3x   = 150
⇒ x   = 50
∴  x = 50 and y =   12
Thus, original speed of train is 50 km/h and time taken by it is 12 h.
Distance covered by train = Speed x Time
=  50 x 12 = 600 km.

Ex 3.7 Class 10 Maths Question 4.
The students of a class are made to stand in rows. If 3 students are extra in a row, there would be 1 row less. If 3 students are less in a row, there would be 2 rows more. Find the number of students in the class.
Solution:
Let the number of rows be x and the number of students in each row be y.
Then the total number of students = xy
Case I: When there are 3 more students in each row
Then the number of students in a row = (y + 3)
and the number of rows = (x – 1)
Total number of students = (x – 1) (y + 3)
∴ (x – 1) (y + 3) = xy
⇒  3x  -y =3 …(i)
Case II: When 3 students are removed from each row
Then the number of students in each row = (y-3)
and the number of rows = (x + 2)
Total number of students = (x + 2) (y – 3)
∴  (x + 2) (y – 3) = xy
⇒ -3x + 2y = 6 …(ii)
Adding the equations (i) and (ii), we get
-y + 2y = 3 + 6
⇒ y = 9
Putting y = 9 in the equation (ii), we get
-3x +   18 = 6
⇒ x = 4
∴ x = 4 and y = 9
Hence, the total number of students in the class is 9 x 4 = 36.

Ex 3.7 Class 10 Maths Question 5.
In a ∆ABC, ∠C = 3 ∠B = 2(∠A + ∠B). Find the three angles.
Solution:
Let ∠A = x° and ∠B = y°.
Then ∠C = 3∠B = (3y)°.
Now ∠A + ∠B + ∠C = 180°
⇒ x + y + 3y = 180°
⇒ x + 4y = 180° …(i)
Also, ∠C = 2(∠A + ∠B)
⇒ 3y – 2(x + y)
⇒ 2x – y = 0° …(ii)
Multiplying (ii) by 4 and adding the result to equation (i), we get:
9x = 180°
⇒ x = 20°
Putting x = 20 in equation (i), we get:
20 + 4y = 180°
⇒ 4y = 160°
⇒  y =  \frac { 160 }{ 40 }  = 40°
∴ ∠A = 20°, ∠B = 40° and ∠C = 3 x 40° = 120°.

Ex 3.7 Class 10 Maths Question 6.
Draw the graphs of the equations 5x – y = 5 and 3x – y = 3. Determine the coordinates of the vertices of the triangle formed by these lines and the y-axis.
Solution:
5x – y = 5    …(i)
3x-y = 3    …(ii)
For graphical representation:
From equation (i), we get: y = 5x – 5
When x = 0, then y -5
When x = 2, then y = 10 – 5 = 5
When x = 1, then y = 5 – 5 = 10
Thus, we have the following table of solutions:

Multiplying equation (1) byp and equation (2) by q and then adding the results, we get:

Multiplying equation (1) by b and equation (2) by a, we get:

Adding equation (3) and equation (4), we get:
(a2 + b2)x = a (a2 + b2) a(a2 + b2)

76x – 189y = -37 …(1)
-189x + 76y = -302   …(2)
Multiplying equation (1) by 76 and equation (2) by 189, we get:
5776x – 14364y = -2812  …(3)
-35721x + 14364y = -57078 …(4)
Adding equations (3) and (4), we get:
5776x – 35721x = -2812 – 57078
⇒ – 29945x = -59890
⇒  x = 2
Putting x = 2 in equation (1), we get:
76   x  2 – 189y   = -37
⇒ 152 – 189y   = -37
⇒ -189y  = -189
⇒  y = 1
Thus, x = 2 and y = 1 is the required solution.

Find the fixed charges and the cost of food per day.
(ii) A fraction becomes \frac { 1 }{ 3 } when 1 is subtracted from the numerator and it becomes \frac { 1 }{ 4 } when 8 is added to its denominator. Find the fraction.
(iii) Yash scored 40 marks in a test, getting 3 marks for each right answer and losing 1 mark for each wrong answer. Had 4 marks been awarded for each correct answer and 2 marks been deducted for each incorrect answer, then Yash would have scored 50 marks. How many questions were there in the test?
(iv) Places A and B are 100 km apart on a highway. One car starts from A and another from B at the same time. If the cars travel in the same direction at different speeds, they meet in 5 hours. If they travel towards each other, they meet in 1 hour. What are the speeds of the two cars?
(v) The area of a rectangle gets reduced by 9 square units, if its length is reduced by units and breadth is increased by 3 units. If we increase the length by 3 units and the breadth by 2 units, the area increases by 67 square units. Find the dimensions of the rectangle.

Women’s struggle to vote got strengthened during the First World War. This movement is called the women’s suffrage movement as the term suffrage usually means right to vote.

During the War, many men were away fighting, and because of this women were called upon to do work that was earlier considered men’s work. Many women began organising and managing different kinds of work. When people saw this they began to wonder why they had created so many unfair stereotypes about women and what they were capable of doing. The suffragettes demanded the right to vote for all women and to get their demands heard they chained themselves to railings in public places. Many suffragettes were imprisoned and went on hunger strikes, and they had to be fed by force. Describe the composition of the Gram Panchayat.
Answer:
Composition of the Gram Panchayat:

  • Every village Panchayat is divided into wards, i.e., smaller areas.
  • Each ward elects a representative who is known as the Ward Member (Panch).
  • All the members of the Gram Sabha also elect a Sarpanch who is the Panchayat
    President. ,
  • The Ward Panchs and the Sarpanch form the Gram Panchayat.

The Gram Panchayat has a Secretary who is also the Secretary of the Gram Sabha.

  • This person is not an elected person but is appointed by the government.
  • He is responsible for calling the meeting of the Gram Sabha and Gram Panchayat.
  • He also keeps record of the proceedings.

Question 2.

The Gram Sabha meeting begins with the Panchayat President (who is also called the Sarpanch) and the members of the Panchayat (the Panchs) presenting a plan on repairing the road that connects the village to the main highway. After this, the discussion moves to the subject of water and water shortages.

A villager called Tijia begins the meeting by saying, “The water problem in Hardas has become very acute. The handpump water has gone well below the point up to which the ground has been drilled. We hardly get any water in the taps. Women have to go to the Suru river which is 3 k.m. away to get water.” One of the members suggests piping water from the Suru and making an overhead tank in the village to increase the supply. But the others think that this will be expensive. It’s better, they feel, to deepen the handpumps and clean the wells for this season. Tijia says, “This is not enough. We need to do something more permanent as groundwater levels seem to be going down every year. We’re using more water than is seeping into the ground.”

Another member, Anwar then tells everyone that he has seen ways of conserving water and recharging (refilling) it in a village in Maharashtra where he’d once gone to visit his brother. It was called watershed development and he had heard that the government gave money for this work.

In his brother’s village people had planted trees, constructed check-dams and tanks. Everyone thought this was an interesting idea and the Gram Panchayat was asked to find out about it in detail.

The next item on the agenda for the Gram Sabha is the finalisation of list of people below the poverty line (BPL) which had to be approved by the Gram Sabha. As soon as the list is read out people begin to whisper. “Natwar has just bought a colour T.V. and his son has sent him a new motorcycle. How can he be below the poverty line?” Soorajmal mutters to the person sitting next to him. Saroj says to Sukhi Bai “How did Birju’s name get on to the list? He has so much land. This list should have only poor people. Jindal Scholarship – Who Can Apply for Jindal Scholarship

An applicant must

  • Be studying in class 11, 12, ITI, Diploma, Graduation and Postgraduation.
  • Fulfill the eligibility of percentage marks in their previous class as specified in the notification.

Jindal Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

The scholarship is split into categories depending on the applicants’ academic level. To get maximum advantages, students must meet the eligibility requirements. Note: The eligibility percentage criterion for applicants with different capabilities is that in all categories they should have scored passing marks. The minimum necessary percentage of relaxation for Jindal scholarships to continue is 5 percent.

Rajarshri Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Merit Scholarship – Benefits

  • Under this scheme, the SC students who secured 75% in the SSC examination and takes admission in Class XI will get scholarship Rs.300 per month for 10 months for two years.
  • This Scholarship will be given in addition to the Government of India (GOI) scholarship and freeship

Post-Matric Scholarship for Persons with Disability – Eligibility

  1. The students who are disabled are eligible to apply. (40% or above)
  2. The students should be a domicile of Maharashtra.
  3. The students should be studying in recognized university or institute.
  4. The scholarship will not be applicable if the candidate fails or quits the same course.

  • The family annual income should not exceed Rs.8 lakh.
  • The candidates belonging to general category and have taken admission are eligible to apply.
  •  The Candidate should not avail any other scholarship or stipend.
  •  The courses which students have enrolled in should be approved by the government or AICTE.
  • The students should not have had 2-year of the gap during their course.
  • The students must have given all semester examinations.

  • The students family annual income should not exceed Rs.8 lakh.
  • 30% scholarship is reserved for female candidates and 70% for the male Candidates.
  • The Candidate should be a domicile of Maharashtra.
  • A total annual course fee of Rs.25,000 is waived off for the student.

MahaDBT Application Procedure

The candidates can apply for Maharashtra DTE scholarship via Aaple Sarkar DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) portal. This platform is uniquely run by the Government of Maharashtra for the students to help them get the benefits of various schemes available. Also, students should make a note that the Aadhaar number is necessary from the academic session 2018-19 to apply for any scholarship via the portal. The candidates are suggested to go through the instructions carefully and get the awareness of all the requirements before filling up the scholarship form. Follow the steps below to apply for the scholarships:

  1. Visit the MahaDBT website owned by Aaple Sarkar DBT Portal.
  2. Click on “New Applicant Registration” for a new application.
  3. Provide an Aadhaar number and other necessary details.
  4. Choose one of the options, to verify the Aadhaar number, such as OTP or the Biometric.
  5. Once the authentication is done, the applicant details will be automatically fetched from UIDAI, filling the personal details, address details, bank details, etc.
  6. After logging in, the dashboard with a list of the scholarship will appear on the screen.
  7. Choose the scholarship, which you want to apply for.

Oasis Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility requirements that a student needs to fulfill while applying for any of the Oasis scholarships, is discussed here in this section. Oasis Scholarship Application Procedure

Step – 1: Registration

  • Visit the official website, oasis.gov.
  • Click on “Student’s registration” on the home page.
  • Select the district where your school/college is based.
  • Next webpage will appear for caste verification. Fill in the details and click on submit.
  • Once the caste certificate is verified, you will be addressed to the online registration page. Fill in all necessary fields and click on the submit button.

Step – 2: Log in with your credentials

  • After successful registration, the student can download their permanent user id/application number and password via the “Download login information/acknowledgment slip” button.
  • Enter application number/user id and password and click on the “Login Now” button.
  • Once logged in, fill the further details and bank information carefully and click on ‘Save and Proceed’.

Step – 3: Review and Lock

Once the student has filled all the information in the application form, they can click on the “Verify and Lock” button to save all the information filled. Once you have saved the information filled, you cannot make any changes further. So, make sure you before locking the details, enter the correct information in the application form.

Step – 4: Print and Submit

After saving the application form, click on the “Download Application Form” button to get the computer-generated copy of the filled-in application form. Submit the printed copy of the duly-filled application form along with the copies of all supporting documents to the concerned BDO (Block Development Officer) for Block area or PO cum DWO for municipality corporation.

Renewal of Oasis Scholarship

After winning the scholarships through the Oasis scholarship website in the previous years, students have to renew those every year. For renewal, the application process is slightly different. Find the below steps with a description of the renewal process:

  • Visit the official website, oasis.org.
  • Click on “Renew Scholarship”  option in the student’s section.
  • Login using the registered user id/application number and password.
  • Verify the earlier entered details and make changes if needed.
  • Once the student has verified his/her previously existing information, they can click on the “Renew Application” button.
  • Enter the information about the present academic session, that he/she are seeking.
  • Click on “Renew and Lock application” button.

Note: Once you have saved the information filled, you cannot make any changes further. So, make sure you before locking the details, enter the correct information in the application form.

Once you have locked your renewal application, you can download the application form and submit it along with all the supporting documents to the concerned Block Development Officer (BDO) for block area or PO cum DWO for municipality corporation.
