Hekko Summary in English

Hekko is a traditional sport played in the Mokokchung district of Nagaland. The word “Hekko” means “challenging the tiger,” derived from ‘Hek’ meaning challenge and ‘Ko’ meaning tiger. The game is inspired by a local folk story that tells of a time when humans and animals lived together and debated who was superior. In this story, the humans challenged the tiger named Aakho, and the challenge came to be known as Hekko.

Today, Hekko is played as a team game involving two teams named Aami (The Man) and Aakho (The Tiger), each team with 11 players. A toss decides which team will be called Aami and which will be Aakho. A circle is drawn on the ground, and the Aami team stays inside the circle, forming a human chain, while the Aakho team remains outside.

Two Aakho players enter the circle and try to push the Aami players out. Aami players who are pushed out, are eliminated from the game. Meanwhile, Aami players attempt to catch Aakho players. When an Aakho player is caught, he must say “Joko” (surrender) to be released, and another teammate takes his place. Points are awarded to teams whenever they get opponents out.

The game ends when all Aakho players are caught, all Aami players are pushed out, or the time limit is reached. The team with the most points is declared the winner. The fastest player from the Aami team receives the title “Khozuba,” and the strongest player from the Aakho team is given the title “Khotiba.”.

The people in the Mokokchung district of Nagaland play a game named Hekko, which is a well-known sport today.

अनुवादः नागालैंड के ‘मोकोकचुंग’ जिले के लोग हेक्को नामक खेल खेलते हैं। जो आज एक प्रसिद्ध खेल है।

Presently, it is played as a team game between two teams: Aakho and Aami. The strongest people in the village are identified through this game.

अनुवाद: वर्तमान में यह दो टीमों के बीच एक टीम गेम के रूप में खेला जाता है। ‘आखो’ और ‘आमी’। इस खेल के माध्यम से गाँव के सबसे मजबूत लोगों की पहचान की जाती है।

There are 11 players in each team. The toss before the game decides which team will be called Aami and which will be called Aakho.

अनुवादः प्रत्येक टीम में 11 खिलाड़ी होते हैं। खेल से पहले टॉस से तय किया जाता है कि कौन सी टीम आमी बनेगी और कौन आखो ।

To play, a circle is first drawn, and the Aami team has to stay within the circle by making a human chain, while the Aakho team stays outside the circle.

अनुवादः खेलने के लिए सबसे पहले एक घेरा बनाया जाता है और ‘आमी टीम’ को उस घेरे के अन्दर रहना होता है। मानव श्रृंखला बनाकर जबकि आखो टीम बाहर रहती है।

At first, two members of the Aakho team enter the circle and try to push the Aami players outside the circle. When an Aami player is pushed out of the circle, he is out and cannot enter again.

अनुवाद: पहले दो सदस्य आखो टीम में प्रवेश करते हैं और आमी टीम के खिलाड़ी को घेरे से बाहर धकेलने का प्रयास करते हैं। जब किसी आमी टीम खिलाड़ी को घेरे से बाहर धकेल दिया जाता है वह आउट हो जाता है।

The Aami team also tries to catch the players of the Aakho team by surrounding them. When an Aakho player is caught, he is not released until he says “Joko” (surrender). When one player gets caught and surrenders, another player from the Aakho team enters the circle. Whenever a team gets a player of the opposite team out, it gains points.

अनुवाद: आमी टीम भी आखो टीम के खिलाड़ी को घेरकर पकड़ने की कोशिश करती हैं। जब आखो का खिलाड़ी पकड़ा जाता है उसको तब तक नहीं छोड़ा जाता जब तक वह ‘जोको’ (समर्पण) नहीं बोलता । जब भी एक खिलाड़ी विपक्षी टीम का आउट हो जाता है तब दूसरा खिलाड़ी टीम में सम्मिलित होता है ।

The game of Hekko gets over when one of the following three things happens:

• All the members of the Aakho team get caught.
• All the members of the Aami team are pushed out of the circle.
• The time runs out. The team with the maximum points wins the game.

अनुवादः हेक्को का खेल तब खत्म होता है जब निम्नलिखित तीन चीजों में से एक होता है:

• आखो टीम के सभी सदस्य पकड़े जाते हैं।
• आमी टीम के सभी सदस्य घेरे से बाहर धकेल दिए जाते हैं ।
• समय समाप्त हो जाता है। सबसे ज़्यादा अंक वाली टीम खेल जीत जाती है।

The fastest player of the Aami Team is awarded the title of “Khozuba” and the strongest player of the Aakho team is awarded the title of “Khotiba”.
